It's All In the Details - By Billy Haley
We’ve all heard the phrase, ‘It’s all in the details.’ It means that the success, quality, or true nature of something depends on small, often overlooked, elements rather than just the big picture. It highlights that careful attention to these minor, subtle, or intricate aspects is what separates average from exceptional. This is what we’re all about, and it is one of the many things that makes My Medic stand above the rest.
Paracord
One of the items people often wonder why we include in our first aid kits is paracord. The reason you get 25 feet of paracord is because paracord has about a thousand uses. You can create substitute shoelaces, a water bottle holder, pull cords, and so much more! Billy himself has used paracord countless times over his 30+ years of practicing medicine and adventuring.
Light Sticks
Light sticks have a plethora of uses, and Billy has used them on countless missions. A light stick can be used as a visual marker in different kinds of emergencies. If you’re lost, you can use it to alert first responders or Search and Rescue to your location. Moreover, if your car breaks down on the side of the road at night, you can set it on the road to alert oncoming drivers. You could even combine it with the paracord to create a “buzzsaw” signal, where you tie the light to the paracord and swing it in a circle. This creates a massive, easy-to-spot signal.
Trauma Shears
Trauma shears are critical in any medical or emergency kit for their ability to quickly and safely cut through clothing, seatbelts, bandages, and thick materials to access injuries without further harming the patient. Their blunt-tipped, rugged design ensures safety and reliability, making them essential for rapid response, trauma care, and dressing adjustments.
You may think trauma shears are pretty straightforward, but you may be surprised by what you can do with a good pair of shears! Here are a few examples that highlight their usefulness:
Rapid Exposure: They allow responders to immediately expose injured areas (e.g., cutting off jeans, jackets, or boots) for assessment.
Safety Design: The blunt tip allows the shears to slide harmlessly against the patient’s skin while cutting clothing.
Versatility: Beyond medical use, they can cut through tough materials like seatbelts, leather, and heavy denim in emergency situations.
Bandage Management: Shears can be used to accurately cut gauze, medical tape, and bandages due to the serrated blades that grab fabric securely.
Durability and Precision: Unlike regular scissors, trauma shears are designed to handle heavy-duty, repetitive use without dulling quickly.
Bushcraft: If you don’t have a tourniquet on hand, trauma shears can be used in place of a windlass when creating a makeshift tourniquet.
Aspirin
If you or someone else has a heart attack, it’s advised to chew up 300mg of aspirin. But why chew it? By chewing the aspirin, it allows the medication to absorb much faster than swallowing it whole. This works because aspirin makes red blood cells more ‘slippery,’ which lowers the chance of blood clots and ‘thins’ the blood.
Hydration MOD
Another item that can make all the difference is the Hydration MOD. The Hydration MOD consists of 2 packets of an electrolyte supplement, 10 water purification tablets, and a water purification guide. Electrolytes help to rapidly rehydrate the body, prevent muscle cramps, and manage severe dehydration caused by heat exhaustion, prolonged lack of water, illness (vomiting and diarrhea), or intense exertion. They replenish a lack of essential minerals lost through sweat or general dehydration and maintain critical nerve and muscle function and fluid balance. Keep in mind, you don’t have to be drastically dehydrated to reap the benefits of an electrolyte supplement. If you’re feeling a little fatigued or lightheaded, some electrolytes can go a long way.

As for the water purification tablets, we all know how critical access to clean water is. Having a way to purify water is critical not only in maintaining adequate hydration, but also in preventing severe, water-borne illnesses like Cholera, Giardia, and dysentery, especially when local water supplies are contaminated or unavailable. It enables the safe consumption of water from untreated sources such as rivers and lakes. Like the electrolyte packets, these purification tabs don’t have to be reserved for emergencies. They can also be used to minimize the need to carry large, heavy quantities of water.
Mini Tool MOD
Let’s take a look at the Mini Tool MOD. The Mini Tool MOD includes a whistle, penlight, and tweezers. First and foremost, the penlight. Check out these uses that may not have crossed your mind:
Pupil Assessment: Shine the penlight into a person’s eyes to check if pupils are equal, round, and reactive to light (PEARL), which is crucial for identifying head injuries, strokes, or hypoxia. Unlike regular flashlights, medical penlights provide a focused, low-intensity beam that is safe for examining eyes without causing discomfort.
Pupil Gauge/Measurements: Our penlight features a printed gauge on the side to measure pupil dilation.
Diagnostic Visualization: Examine the throat or ears, which general lighting might not illuminate.
Emergency Lighting: Utilize as a compact, durable light source for navigating dark environments or finding items in your kit.
Convenience: Our penlight features a pocket clip for easy access and is designed for one-handed operation, which is ideal when examining a patient.
Personal Protection: Using a dedicated medical penlight is preferred over a smartphone, as it prevents contaminating personal items with bodily fluids and offers a more direct, concentrated beam.
Second, whistles are incredibly handy in many situations. They are a great attention-grabbing, long-range, and energy-efficient signaling device. Unlike cell phones or flashlights, whistles do not rely on batteries and work in extreme weather conditions. They are small, lightweight, and can be kept on a keychain for immediate access. Here are a few ways you can utilize your whistle:
Signaling for Rescue: A loud, shrill blast is much more effective than yelling, which can cause you to lose your voice and does not carry as far. Whistles can be heard over long distances, through thick forests, and over wind. It also requires a lot less energy than screaming and has a much lower risk of exhausting you.
Locating Trapped Individuals: If you are injured or immobile, a whistle can help first responders, search and rescue teams, or bystanders pinpoint your exact location under rubble, debris, thick trees and brush, or a crushed vehicle.
Preventing Separation: Hikers and skiers can use whistles to keep in touch across large, noisy, or low-visibility areas.
Crime Prevention/Self-Defense: The piercing sound can disorient an attacker and attract attention to a potential assault or robbery.
Water Safety: Boaters, swimmers, and scuba divers use whistles to signal boats for pickup or alert lifeguards in the event of an emergency.
Here are some standard whistle codes:
Three Blasts (3-3-3): The international, universal distress signal for ‘help me.’
Two Blasts: A response signal meaning ‘come here’ or used to reply that you have heard a distress call.
One Blast: Often used to ask, "Where are you?"
Stay Alive Guide
Lastly, we've been asked, “What’s with the Stay Alive Guide? Why not a first aid guide?” This is easy. Here at My Medic, we take everything we do to the highest level in order to ensure you stay prepared for just about anything. A simple first aid guide wasn’t good enough, so we opted for a more complete preparedness approach. The Stay Alive Guide is chock full of valuable information, not just on first aid, but also on wilderness survival as well. With every kit, you get the digital version for free.
Now that we’ve gone over the various little details we include in our first aid kits, we hope you feel more comfortable with your kit and more prepared for an emergency!
